Every fall the Audi Club of North America Rocky Mountain Chapter puts on what I think is one of the most fun get togethers/driving events of the year. It’s called the Mystery Rally, and I invite all of you to come on this fun adventure. Although its called a rally, it isn’t much of a race - it’s more about the route and gathering information along the way. Think scavenger hunt, but in cars, on twisty, fun roads, and with an unknown destination. It’s really cool.

You and a co-driver pack up for a weekend and meet up on a Saturday morning with the group. Each team gets a packet of directions and questions. The questions all correspond to places and things along the route, often requiring you to stop and take a look around different landmarks.

Lunch in Dillon last year

The directions will eventually take you to the lunch location, via as many good driving roads as can be crammed into the route. Everyone meets up again for lunch, whereupon the second set of directions and questions are handed out. These take you through the rest of the route to the final destination.

One of the stops to gather some information along the way

The end of the drive is set at a nice hotel in a fun area - last year my roommate and I brought our bikes and found some epic trails right outside the hotel. There’s a dinner banquet and drinks for all the competitors and the winners are announced and get prizes. Placing is determined by your team’s ability to get the questions right along the way.

On Sunday morning, a big breakfast is provided for the group and then there’s plenty of time to explore the area some more before heading back home. My written description can’t do it justice, but if you’re a rocky mountain Audi driver, I strongly encourage you to join the club and come on this year’s Mystery Rally! You’ll have a blast - it’s been my favorite event by far - and you’ll get to explore a lot of neat places in the Rockies! (Plus, thanks to our sponsors, you’ll get a night in a 5-star hotel and dinner and breakfast, all for you and your co-driver, for only $200 total. If you ignore the whole “fun and excellent driving experience” part of it, it’s still a smashing deal for a weekend getaway) Here’s a few more of my favorite pictures from last year’s rally. Anyway, let me know if you’re interested or have any questions!

Sounds fun. When does it usually occur? I don't have an Audi, or even an appropriate vehicle for such an event. I'll be heading up to the Colorado Grand finishing weekend in Vail this year, Sept 16/17.

It’ll be Sept 24/25 this year. I didn’t know about the Colorado Grand, I might have to try to make it out to Vail to check that out!

It’s a great time. Coincides with Oktoberfest in Lions Head village.

This year it’ll be September 24/25, and last year there was a Golf R that came, so I’d assume other people are welcome! You’d just have to join the club first to get tickets!
